Living in Galveston, TX, you get acquainted with a lot of ghosts. Especially in the historic neighborhood where I live with all the wonderful old Victorian homes and the Historic Strand Business District. This is what is left of the Galveston that existed pre-1900 Great Storm.
Take a walking tour around the downtown section of this beautiful island and you're bound to encounter a ghost or two somewhere along your route. It is rumored that the entire island is a graveyard. Prior to moving here, I had been in a few old homes that had ghosts but had never actually lived in one. It really isn't so bad once you get used to.
The home I live in is one of the oldest on the island. It actually stayed in the original German builder's family until the 70's. Then the previous owner to me bought the place, redid it 70's style and then used it as a rent house until I bought it in 1999. Unfortunately, he did a lot of things that hurt the home, so, I've been busy trying to undo some of what he did.
Upon moving in, I used to have the ghost of an older lady glaring at me every night while I slept. When my grandson moved in for a little while, he used to tell me there were monsters in the house. He was only two and didn't yet know what a ghost was. Scooby Doo taught him about ghosts. After about a year of working on the home, the old lady came a few nights and smiled at me. It appears that she approved of what I was doing as she was gone soon after and hasn't returned. She can now rest in peace knowing her beloved home is in good hands.
A friend of mine opened a restaurant in the Historic Strand neighborhood a few years back. His building is rumored to be the most haunted building in Galveston. People taking pictures in the restaurant come away with photos filled with spirit lights/globes. Many people like to dine there just to see if they can feel a ghost or not. The building had many previous uses. They used it as a temporary infirmary duing the Civil War and then again after the 1900 Storm. Many people living in the lofts across the street report seeing soldiers through the windows at night. I also see ghosts of Indians, the original inhabitants, who were massacred by John Lafitte's pirates and other European settlers who settled on the island. If you're ever in Galveston, be sure to check it out. The restaurant is called, Le Croy's Bistro, and is located right on The Strand. Owner's are Tommy Le Croy and Barbara Davis. Ask about the photo's of spirits currently on display an enjoy the genuine New Orleans style cuisine.
One night another psychic and I spent the evening in the most haunted area of the building. I brought along my laptop and did automatic writing. I can remember much of what was said, but only about half of it actually showed up on the computer. Now, there was a mystery! What did spirit do with the extra verbage?
Now that Halloween is getting close, look for ghost tours both here on the island and in your neighborhood towns where there are old homes for viewing. A guided tour is the best as the guide can give you lots of info on the type of hauntings, who the ghost is/was, and what kind of appearances it usually makes.
